How do I know which engine oil to use?

Firstly, please refer to your manual on the engine oil specifications. There is no one-size-fits-all engine oil. There’s a common misconception that the thicker the oil the better the oil is.

Secondly, not all oils are created equal. Different oils use basestocks of varying quality and have different additive formulations that enhances the properties of the engine oil.

Engine oils sold by LittleRedCarShop are of the highest quality, Made in USA (not china, msia or singapore) with quality assurance. We do not stock cheap/unbranded engine oils with unknown technical specifications.

Generally speaking, most car models in Singapore (with the exception of the european brands) will be compatible with engine oils with API Specifications of w-30 (eg 0w-30.5w-30,10w-30) and w-40 (0w-40, 5w-40, 10w-40). Certain manufacturers have detailed specifications to be met (VW502. MB229.5 etc).

In a 0w-40 for example the 0w bit (W = winter, not weight or watt or anything else for that matter) simply means that the oil must have a certain maximum viscosity/flow at low temperature. The lower the "W" number the better the oil's cold temperature/cold start performance.

The 40 in a 0w-40 simply means that the oil must fall within certain viscosity limits at 100°C. This is a fixed limit and all oils that end in 40 must achieve these limits. Once again the lower the number, the thinner the oil: a 30 oil is thinner than a 40 oil at 100°C etc. Your handbook will specify whether a 20. 30 or 40 etc is required.

My manual says w-20. -w30. -w40 oils are suitable, how then do I choose?

A thinner oil will provide better fuel economy and acceleration with the engine sound more eager and responsive. The engine will feel quieter and smoother with a thicker oil. A thicker oil will provide better protection at high temperatures. Hence for drivers with aggresive driving profiles for hard driving at high rpms over a long period of time, a thicker oil will be better. For engines that “consumes” engine oil, a slightly thicker oil may be more appropriate. Alternatively you may consider the LiquiMoly MoS2 engine oil additive or Liqui Moly Cera Tec for extra protection for your engine.
